During the 2019 Mobile World Congress, Telefonica and Microsoft announced an expanded partnership to leverage Azure for telecom companies. The two companies have worked together to-date on Aura, Telefonica's AI-based digital assistant. Telefonica is aiming to use Azure for its Home as a Computer offering, with Aura Living Apps running on Telefonica devices.

In particular, Telefonica plans to use Azure Cognitive Services to power its AI offerings and use the technology across web services, social media and its contact centers. Additionally, the two companies are considering ways to use 5G, edge computing, machine learning, AI and blockchain to better optimize networks and are controlling their IP according to Microsoft's Shared Innovation Initiative.

"Telefónica is applying cutting-edge technology to its ongoing transformation, pioneering virtualization and softwarization to develop smart, liquid networks ready to be powered by AI," said José María Álvarez-Pallete, chairman and CEO of Telefonica in a statement. "This agreement strengthens our relationship and our common belief that AI technology and the use of data should be based on solid ethical principles and empower people to control their digital lives," he added.
