Microsoft to Dynamics NAV Partner Community: Prepare for Extensions
The Microsoft Dynamics NAV team has put in motion a range of plans to change the way customizations and add-on solutions will be managed in the future. As NAV takes on an increasingly committed cloud-first view of the world through its Azure-based NAV Managed Service for Partners and Project "Madeira", the team is advising developers that its still young Extensions framework will eventually become the predominant way to deliver approved add-ons and customizations.
NAV extensions did not get off to a particularly strong start with the launch of Dynamics NAV 2016. They have such limited capabilities now that many technically-minded NAV veterans noticed the framework but disregarded it as a production-worthy tool. It was commonly written off as having almost no practical application in its current form.
While there is no sign that the fundamentals of developing for Dynamics NAV will change radically in the short term, Microsoft has been clarifying to NAV partners that the introduction of Extensions in NAV 2016 is a serious effort that they should prepare for, as it could create major changes in future releases.
