Hey Hey Hey, Goodbye: Microsoft to Replace Dynamics GP Business Portal by 2015

Here's the thing: Business Portal has been an important part of Dynamics GP for several years. It allowed customers to gain a quick overview of important business system data, both graphically and from pre-defined reports. The "wow factor" of the Portal when you first logged in to Dynamics GP was a key feature touted during all demonstrations to prospective customers. The challenge has always been the proprietary architecture, software dependencies, and troublesome administration of the module. Based on much VAR feedback over the past few years Microsoft has committed to making a change.

"The plan is to basically phase out Business Portal as we release apps or modules inside Dynamics GP that replace the same functionality", said Microsoft's Kelly Obach, Manager of the Executive Business Center.

Business Portal will not be updated with any new features or functionality moving forward and will not be released with the planned Dynamics GP 2015 product release.

Microsoft has been advising that Business Portal was headed for retirement since as early as September 2013.

Where are we with Business Portal today?  Version 6.0 was finally released recently after initial delays. Microsoft held back the updated product release due to some issues that surfaced during testing. After a few tweaks in 6.0 for Dynamics GP 2010 and 6.1 for GP 2013 are now both available. What is important to note is that these new releases are 64-bit only and thus will not work with any 32-bit installs you may have continued running.

Let me share some critical requirements you need to be aware of:

  • You must have Windows Server 2008 x64 or later or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP! Or later.
