Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Operations Roadmap: Next release due July 2017

April 5 2017

The Spring 2017 release of Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Operations is expected to launch in July 2017, a bit past the real season but in time to deliver on highly anticipated new deployment options, upgrade tools, and updates to the mobile and analytics experience.

The spring release will build on positive momentum. Microsoft reported this week that  they have over 100 live customers on D365 for Operations, with 400 more projects actively working toward production status.

Much to welcome e.g. new migration tools, and the future potential - and, much to worry about short term. If we can't sell Ax 2012 from 1 July, and all the previous partner code has to be refactored and tested across reports, workflows, interfaces, isv modules then it is going to be difficult to sell that ip to a new customer, until all that code migration is done and can be demonstrated e.g. a localised payroll, or a major vertical like construction, jewellery, utility billing etc. When customers move to the cloud it is often with the idea of outsourcing their IT. Frequent updates that require testing needs some one to set up manage the test environment, schedule users' time, devise test scripts etc. Most will expect the partner to be involved -and there is a cost and availability side to that. How many of such exercises can be supported in parallel across multi verticals. Not all customers share the same business cycle for when they can of such work, especially across an enterprise which is where Dynamics should be installed. I struggle to believe that an enterprise company, with a vertical offering, and multiple localised taxes, payrolls etc can do this in 1-2 weeks, and without either a significant internal team, or partner involvement.
