Microsoft Dynamics Profile: First-time MVP builds community around bots, Power Platform

June 30 2020

To help provide critical information about the coronavirus, first-time Microsoft MVP Renato Romão put his skills to work to create one of the first COVID-19 chatbots.

"I showed the app on a Microsoft webinar and more than 500 people have already used my chatbot," says Romão, a business applications and artificial intelligence specialist who received his first Microsoft MVP award on June 1.

Power Virtual Agents Super User

Microsoft has recognized Romão's efforts in the Power Virtual Agents ecosystem. He is the Power Virtual Agents Community founder and has been named a Power Virtual Agents Super User for his contributions to Microsoft forums focused on the intelligent chatbot platform.

My first involvement [with Power Virtual Agents] was in November 2019, when Microsoft launched the product at the Microsoft Ignite event. I started [creating] my chatbots and helped users inside the community. This recognition is for the members that help more users inside the community with videos, messages, posts, and sample projects. I'm the first Super User in the world inside the Power Virtual Agents Community. This recognition is for members who have helped more users inside the community with videos, messages, posts, and sample projects.

Romão says businesses can use Power Virtual Agents to empower people in various ways. For example, the platform can create AI-based natural conversation to customers to improve service levels. Romão says he is seeing a lot of organizations using Power Virtual Agents to create FAQ chatbots in their companies.

In the future, I see that the most valuable organizations will use this tool [for all processes] and automation inside the company and for customers: managing leave requests and human resources processes, delivering important content such as knowledge bases, receiving calls, and organizing the customer conversation using the mobile phone without a human agent. I have already trained more than 2,000 people to do intelligent chatbots and I hope that is the biggest opportunity for the partners.

Romão also plans to create intelligent chatbots using ProCode technologies. And over the next few months, his goal is to deliver AI content related to Bot Framework, Bot Framework Composer, and Azure Cognitive Services.

From finance to IT

Currently, a senior full-stack developer at Trentim in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Romão has been developing systems and software for six years and has been building business solutions with Microsoft technologies for the past four.

I have the responsibility to develop systems assigned by my project manager. Sometimes customers schedule technical meetings with me during the day to solve an issue. I build the best solutions for our customers using Microsoft and non-Microsoft technologies, like .NET, React, Angular, Office 365, and Power Platform. Basically, I understand the customer project, [develop] the architecture of the system, and develop the system using the best technology for the situation. I also create simple presentations about a Power Platform or Office 365 tools, or sell one of our products/services.

Romão started his career working in finance in a small IT company in Sao Paulo called Quicked. While there, the director showed him some systems, and asked him to reproduce the same system in another scenario so he could learn about IT technologies. And a year later, he completed his first project by himself for a big customer.

Today, I love the finance area, but I love technology more. My first director at Quicked is the same director I have today at Trentim – a big detail is that he is my brother. My first experience was using .NET technology with Microsoft Dynamics CRM in 2016. I don’t remember the Dynamics version but the objective of the project was to deliver a call-center platform to organize customers, emails, and phone calls inside the unique system.

Sharing knowledge about the Power Platform and AI

About three years ago, Romão started to post technology content on his blog related to development processes and Microsoft technologies. Last September, he created and began focusing on his YouTube channel to help users and organizations better understand the Power Platform and AI.

I’m focused on Power Apps, Power Automate, Common Data Service, Power Virtual Agents, and Bot Framework. Before May, I only had Portuguese content, but I received some messages about translating my content to help users using Power Virtual Agents, and now I post three videos per week in Portuguese and one video in English.

For the past three years, Romão has been the community manager at CaquiCoders, a 1,300-member group that organizes technical events with speakers from the technical community.

The idea is to organize Portuguese and English content through the community about Power Platform, Dynamics, .NET, and non-Microsoft technologies. For the past three years, I've also been an associate at MTAC Brazil, a non-profit organization, helping non-profit organizations, communities, students, and interested professionals to improve the internal process with IT.  We select the best professionals in Brazil and around the world, recognizing their job in the community, and today we have more than 200 members worldwide.

As for his MVP award, Romão says, "The Microsoft MVP recognition means [I can have] more impact on the community to help more people and to continuously deliver important and significant content."
