The world of information technology is built on connections. We expect that every system is connected to other systems, that connections are always available, reliable, free of charge, fast—and that they have unlimited bandwidth. In an ideal world, the effort involved in replicating data from one system to another would be a waste of time and money.
Reality is different. Technology infrastructures in some countries cannot meet “Always On” connectivity across business systems. Many people work offline or in disconnected states—for example, when they are making sales calls, working in the service field, or working from remote locations. But business systems do need to exchange information; survival and success in a technology-based marketplace depends on people’s ability to access and share accurate, updated information.
