New Research Finds SMBs Largely Unprepared for Cybersecurity Risks

How seriously does your company take security? It seems like an innocent question because, on the surface, security is important to every business, no matter the size.

Yet, the scary reality is that, even though most small- and medium-sized businesses (SMB) think that they are doing enough for security, a recent survey by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) and Symantec that the vast majority of SMBs don't have any security plan in place.

According to an article at ZDNet, "83% of those companies do not have a cybersecurity plan in place even though they are relying more and more on technology such as cloud services like Dynamics CRM Online that have invested in security standards and social media to conduct business." What's scary is that 77% think they are safe from cyberattacks.

Somewhere, somehow, there is a serious disconnect between perceived security and actual security.

It doesn't matter how small your business is, every company is at risk of a cyberattack. Again from ZDNet:

"Symantec reported that 40% of nearly 1 billion recorded cyberattacks in the first three months of 2012 were targeted at companies with 500 or less employees. The company said cyberattacks, such as a data breach, could prove fatal to small companies."

And yet, the majority of companies have no idea how they would respond to an attack and 66% said they aren't even concerned about whether or not their data is hacked.
