Ambiguous Team Foundation Server (TFS) error "Source control provider could not be initialized"

On the Dynamics GP Support and Services blog, Microsoft's Terry Heley noted that as many people begin to set up their development areas to TFS online, they are being met with a standard vague error message that plays a lot of different roles.
